Artist Assistant Position -

Parkallen Canada 150 Rink Mural Community Art Project 

The Parkallen Canada 150 Rink Mural will provide an opportunity for the community to be involved in creating a dynamic, colourful mural that will add vibrancy and interest to the north exterior of the outdoor skating rink in Ellingson Park. The theme of the mural is “What makes Parkallen a great place to live?” and will include the past 150 years, now and into the future.

The Artist Assistant Position will support the Professional Mural Artist, Theodora Harasymiw who has been hired by the Parkallen Community League to facilitate our community mural art project.

Project Availability: July 12 – August 11 (140 hours, 30 - 35 hours/week)

Hourly wage: $18/hour (eligible

for STEP grant funding*)

Position Requirements:

• Artistic training with painting experience – Student with High School Art Advanced Placement and/or enrolled in a post-secondary Fine Arts program.

Portfolio of four paintings (digital images).

• Mural painting experience an asset.

• Connection to or residence in Parkallen preferred.

• Confidence and experience working with the public or with groups of people.

Organized, capable of working independently with minimal supervision.

• Willing to take direction & support the Artist Facilitator

• Community involvement, volunteer experience

• Driver’s license and vehicle an asset.

Duties include:

• Pick up materials & meet deliveries of materials – requires a vehicle and valid driver’s license. (July 12-13)

• Priming mural panels in preparation for painting (July 17 – 19).

• Community Mural Workshops (July 20 & 21) – Set up, registering drop- in participants, assisting artist & participants during the workshop, clean up.

• Assisting Artist in transferring the mural design to mural panels July 24.

• Assisting Artist in the painting of mural (July 25 – 28 & August 7 – 11), additional time may be required.

• Applying finish coat to seal and protect the mural

Organize display of community artwork in the hall for Canada 150 celebration & mural unveiling (Sept 9)

• (Optional) Coordinate & assist Green Shack Park Programmer with summer crafts (July 1 – 11 & August 12 – 31)
