community mural project in 2026

Parkallen residents participated in a series of community consultations in Spring 2026, expressing unanimous support for a mosaic mural. The mural is coming together from 350 individually painted tiles which will form a larger image of “Connection Trees” on the north-facing side of our hall.

Parkallen Elementary School is an important part of our community. So, of course, they are adding their artistic signature to our Parkallen Community Mural. Students from all four program streams, including the Regular Program, Chinese (Mandarin) Bilingual Program, Interactions Program, and Opportunity Program, came together to work on their tiles.

By pairing classes across grades and programs, students had the opportunity to explore art in an inclusive and accessible way and express their creativity. Through shared artistic experiences, students learned from one another, discovered new talents and built connections. Older students developed valuable leadership skills by mentoring and encouraging their younger peers, fostering confidence, collaboration, and a strong sense of belonging. Once again, this mural project has brought people together, providing meaningful opportunities to build community, and demonstrating how we’re individuals who make up a bigger picture that is the spirit of Parkallen. 

Thank you to all the teachers, Vincent Adzinyo, Chen Li, Shama Jomaa, Jackie Chu, Elisha Farrell, Shaylee Bourgouin, Michelle Xu, and Jasmin Paquet who helped lead their classes with these painting sessions. Thank you to Loretta Ng and Angus Hossack who supported this activity at the school, and of course, thanks to all the children for their creativity!!

Mazurka

Mazurka led 2 of the mural painting sessions for Parkallen this fall.  A special treat was having Lewis Lavoie attend the Sept 12th session. Lewis Lavoie is an artist from St. Albert is also the creator of the innovative Mural Mosaic process, which we are using for this project. It is through this mural kit that we are able to have 350 community participants contribute their artistic creation to the larger picture.  Thank you Lewis for the opportunity, and thank you Mazurka for bringing art programming to Parkallen!!  

Artistic Team

Marlena Wyman

Marlena Wyman is an Edmonton based visual artist who has lived in Parkallen for 30 years. She is a co-administrator for Urban Sketchers Edmonton, helping to organize regular monthly sketch-meets for anyone to join in on. Marlena has exhibited across Canada for over 25 years, and is represented by Bugera Lamb Fine Art in Edmonton.

Nicole Galellis

Nicole Galellis has called Parkallen home for over 20 years. She enjoys drawing and painting and teaches art with Edmonton Public Schools. Nicole has completed several large public art installations, including projects at the Lois Hole Hospital and the Borden Park Pavilion. She is excited to connect with fellow community members through the mural project!

Dawn Hunter

Dawn Hunter (she/her) lives in Parkallen and is an active member of the little neighborhood church. She has studied, made, and taught Visual Art for most of her adult life. Dawn works as a Graduate Student Advisor for the Fine Arts Departments at the University of Alberta.

Susan MacEachran

This drawing is of Susan MacEachran contemplating her garden. Susan loves Parkallen. Her favourite colour is blue. Art has been her career from the time of grey scale paints used to retouch photographs. She is looking forward to ‘playing’ with everyone creating our mural.
